Moon Magic WorkshopsLos Angeles-based artist, educator and activist engaged in social justice issues, especially those concerning girls and women, Kesa Kivel conducted two Moon Magic workshops with GIA girls. Moon Magic addresses the emotional, practical, and cultural aspects of menstruation and growing up female. The curriculum includes a butterfly art activity to help girls develop their intuition; a read-around activity on puberty rites from around the world; an exercise where girls learn critical thinking skills and critique menstrual product advertisements; a red jellybean celebration; and a take-home letter and resource list for parents and guardians, offering talking points about growing up female, a recommended reading list, and suggestions for ways to celebrate a girl's first period. Planned Parenthood Presentations/Workshops6th-8th grade GIA members were able to participate in the following Planned Parenthood Presentations and Workshops: "Sexuality Through the Lifespan"
This lesson discusses human sexuality as a lifelong process that is not dependent upon sexual activity. Goal of the lesson is to expand students' understanding of sexuality as made up of (among other components): Our Bodies, Our Feelings, Our Behavior and Our Values. Includes an activity on gender stereotyping. "Abstinence and Assertiveness Skills"
Defines and discusses abstinence as a concrete tool to incorporate into one's choices. Includes activity and discussion in which students identify the beliefs, skills and support systems needed to make abstinence work. Also clarifies the value and power of assertive communication, using role-play and discussion. Time is available at the end of the presentation for anonymous questions from students. "Refuse to Abuse"
Discusses the characteristics of a healthy versus an unhealthy relationship as well as various types of relationship violence. Aims to equip students with the tools and knowledge necessary to recognize the warning signs of an unhealthy or violent relationship. Includes time at end for anonymous questions. "Puberty/Anatomy/Reproduction"
Explanation of the physical, mental and emotional aspects of puberty. Participants also learn about internal and external male and female reproductive anatomy and systems. Includes time at end for anonymous questions.
